How we teach DT:

 

At Romsey Abbey Primary School we believe that Design and technology plays a vital role in our curriculum, giving our pupils a range of skills needed throughout their lives. We complete a range of projects that are closely linked to other subjects and have a real outcome as the end product. We also practice skills, these are often linked to our art and our text drivers in English.

 

Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Throughout the school, pupils research products, develop design criteria and make realistic plans to achieve aims. Whilst planning, children think ahead about the order of work, choose appropriate tools, equipment, materials, components and techniques.

 

Whilst making each product, children learn to use a range of tools to cut, shape and join materials, thinking carefully about their design criteria and the final purpose of their product.

Evaluation is a key part of our DT curriculum ensuring children show reflexivity, setting aims to improve their skills and refine future products.  Across the school, we ensure a range of skills are taught progressing to the inclusion of mechanical, electrical and computer control into products. Linking closely to our science curriculum they learn to design and cook food learning about what constitutes a healthy diet.
